For Australian businesses with 5 to 200 staff, the leading EAP options are Mindway, The Wellness Workshop, Spill, and Uprise. Mindway is the best all-rounder for engagement and flexible, affordable pricing.
This guide compares four EAP providers built with small and medium businesses in mind, and explains exactly how we ranked them.
Disclosure: Mindway is our own service. We've applied the same criteria to every provider and noted where each one is the better fit.
How we ranked themWe scored each provider on seven criteria, weighted by what matters most to a business with 5 to 200 employees:
Criteria | Weight | What we looked for |
Employee engagement | 25% | Does the program actually get used? Self service booking, app access, proactive content, movement challenges, not just a hotline |
Pricing transparency | 20% | Clear pricing that suits small headcounts, not scaled-down enterprise quotes |
Contract flexibility | 15% | Term length, lock-in, ease of leaving |
Speed of access | 15% | Setup time, time to first session, self-booking |
Leader and manager support | 10% | Training for managers who often double as HR in a small business |
EAP Ownership | 10% | Where is the program based (ideally Australian), and where does it extend support to? |
Family access | 5% | Whether support extends beyond the employee |
The top 4
1. Mindway: best all-rounder for teams of 5 to 200Mindway is Australian owned provider built specifically for small and medium businesses. Flat, transparent pricing with no multii year lock-in. Mindway provides a choice between the flexible Starter EAP with per use session billing and the set-cost Complete EAP. Complete includes 6 counselling sessions per employee (extending to immediate family), monthly leadership training and app-based self-booking. Engagement is the focus, with 28 to 40% of staff engaging with the program versus an industry norm of around 5%.
Watch out for: Mindway focuses solely on Australia, so it isn't a global provider. If you have staff overseas and need one coordinated program across countries, you'll need a provider with international infrastructure.
2. The Wellness Workshop: best for pairing EAP with in-person workshopsA Melbourne-based provider offering EAP alongside wellbeing workshops, leadership and mental health training, and psychosocial hazard awareness programs, delivered online Australia-wide and face-to-face in Melbourne. Its EAP goes beyond counselling, with access to services such as dietetics, exercise physiology, health and performance coaching, and meditation and mindfulness. Pricing is published, starting from $7.99 per employee per month or $209 per session.
Watch out for: Face-to-face services are concentrated in Melbourne and surrounds, and it's a smaller operation, so check capacity and response times if your team is spread nationally.
3. Spill: best for teams that live in Slack or TeamsSpill offers a rolling 30-day contract, unlimited access to therapy, and Slack and MS Teams integrations so employees can book a same-day session in a few clicks.
Watch out for: The model leans on workplace chat tools, so it suits office and tech teams better than frontline, trade or field-based workforces.
4. Uprise: best for wellbeing check-insFounded in Australia and now part of US-based Uprise Health, Uprise offers an app with wellbeing checks and self-guided skills training.
Watch out for: The app is the front door, but employees can't book counselling in it. To start counselling, they have to call and speak with someone who arranges the appointment. Every extra step between "I need help" and a booked session is a point where people drop off, which can mean lower engagement.
How to chooseStart with what you need most. If your priority is a program your team will actually use, with simple pricing and leader training included, Mindway fits most businesses in this range. If you want workshops alongside your EAP (which is useful for wider support), look at The Wellness Workshop. If your whole team works in Slack or Teams, Spill is worth a look. And if you want an app focused on wellbeing check-ins, Uprise is an option.
Whichever you choose, ask every provider three questions: what is your avg. utilisation rate, what is the total annual cost for my headcount, and what happens if I want to leave after 12 months?
